Hey Geeks,
Microsoft has rolled out its first homegrown AI image generator, marking a big step toward building its own creative tech and giving tools like DALL-E some real competition.
The Future of the Content Economy
beehiiv started with newsletters. Now, they’re reimagining the entire content economy.
On November 13, beehiiv’s biggest updates ever are dropping at the Winter Release Event.
For the people shaping the next generation of content, community, and media, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
Microsoft Launches Its First In-House AI Image Generator
Microsoft's first in-house AI image generator, MAI-Image-1, is out now. You can try it in Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions. It's also available in all countries that support these services, except the EU for now.
On Bing, you can find it at bing.com/create, on the mobile app, or from the search bar. It's one of the options in the model menu, next to DALL-E 3 and GPT-4o (both from OpenAI). Meanwhile, on Copilot, it's now part of Story Mode. MAI-Image-1 will visualize your stories in Audio Expressions.
Already in the Top 10
Announced on October 13, MAI-Image-1 quickly entered the top 10 text-to-image models on LMArena — an AI benchmark platform that ranks image generators by user feedback and creative quality.
It currently holds #9, tied with Seedream 3.
According to Microsoft AI, the team “prioritized rigorous data selection and nuanced evaluation focused on tasks that closely mirror real-world creative use cases.”
The goal: flexibility, visual diversity, and practical value for creative professionals.
What Makes MAI-Image-1 Different
Unlike most text-to-image models that churn out repetitive or generic designs, MAI-Image-1 focuses on photorealism — capturing reflections, bounce lighting, and intricate textures that other AI tools often miss.
It’s built for resource-heavy, high-fidelity visuals — from cinematic landscapes to product renders — and it does it fast.
You can browse real examples on Microsoft AI’s blog.
Microsoft’s Growing AI Independence
The launch also signals Microsoft’s gradual shift away from OpenAI. While the two companies remain partners, Microsoft is increasingly developing its own in-house AI models.
In August, Microsoft AI introduced MAI-Voice-1 (a natural speech model) and MAI-1-preview, a chatbot model originally planned for Copilot — now being replaced by OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Anthropic’s Claude AI as optional LLMs.
TL;DR
MAI-Image-1 marks a big step toward Microsoft’s self-sufficient AI ecosystem — and it’s tailor-made for creators who need fast, photorealistic imagery.
Try it now on Bing Image Creator or within Copilot Story Mode and see how it stacks up.
Quick Tips!
Access Points: Try MAI-Image-1 at bing.com/create, via the Bing mobile app, or in the search bar. Look for it in the model menu alongside DALL-E 3 and GPT-4o.
Story Mode: On Microsoft Copilot, select Story Mode to visualize stories with Audio Expressions powered by MAI-Image-1.
Supported Regions: Available globally except in the EU for now.
Photorealistic Outputs: Utilize MAI-Image-1 for detailed, photorealistic landscapes, realistic lighting, reflections, and resource-intensive scenes.
Creative Feedback: The model is tuned with feedback from creative industry professionals, so expect flexibility, visual diversity, and fewer generic or repetitive results.
Performance: MAI-Image-1 handles complex visual tasks quickly; faster than many competing models, making it ideal for creators needing rapid, high-quality outputs.
Wrapping up!
MAI-Image-1 marks Microsoft’s growing independence in AI development and delivers advanced photorealistic image generation, prioritizing the needs of creators. With its rapid output, attention to detail, and real-world creative use case tuning, it stands out as a valuable tool for generating professional visuals, especially for users outside the EU.
